A lover of mankind, he never had a family; a patriotic son of his native land he died alone in a foreign country. He invented a new explosive to improve the peacetime industries of mining and road building, but he saw it used as a weapon of war to kill and injured people. On the 3d September 1865 a big explosion occurred at his factory, killing five people. Among them was his younger brother. Since then he devoted himself to the study of explosives.

Newspapers called him “The merchant of death”. He was disappointed with what he read and how he would be remembered.

A man of contrast

Swedish chemist Alfred Bernhard Nobel invented dynamite in 1866 and it made him rich. Nobel was as interested in drama and poetry as he was in chemistry and physics, but it was science that made him famous, and by the time of his death he held more than 350 patents and controlled factories and labs in 20 countries.

The story goes that when Nobel's brother died, a newspaper mistakenly published an obituary of Nobel that emphasized the fact that he had invented things that blew up and killed people. Nobel, not wanting to be remembered in that way, pledged his wealth toward the betterment of humanity. In his will he directed the establishment of a foundation to award annual prizes for achievement in chemistry, physics, literature and efforts toward international peace. He said: “Let the whole world know: Alfred Nobel has redeemed his sins before the mankind”.

The Nobel Prize is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the world and includes a cash prize of nearly one million dollars. In 1968 the prize field was broadened to include an award in economic science.

8. Подведение итогов.

What conclusion can we make today?

Учащиеся говорят о том, какие они могут сделать выводы из урока.

-         Unfortunately civilization achievements don’t always bring the good to the mankind. I think, we should always think about what we do. We should be very accurate with our words and deeds. And we should think about how we will be remembered. You become responsible, forever, for what you have done.

9. Выставление оценок. Домашнее задание.

Read the text about Japan’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Ex. 80, p. 111 (textbooks).
